Frank Cachia

Frank Cachia is a pioneer in electronic music production and performance in Malta having been active as a keyboardist since the mid-eighties. He started playing music since the age of 9 playing the clarinet with the St Catherine’s Band Club in Zurrieq.

He went on to study the piano and at the age of sixteen he was playing keyboards and jamming with bands such as Structure (with fellow Zurrieq musicians Claudio and Mark Tonna) and in Tigne with members of local band Upside Images. In 1986, he eventually formed one of the first electro-pop bands based in The Tigne complex named Potential Ecstasy (the other being ‘The Joy Circuit who were based in the rehearsal room opposite theirs). Frank made his live debut in the Maltasajf ’88 as a keyboardist with band Lucigen Cylinder.

In 1990, Frank met Edwin Balzan, Claude Adamston and Pierre Farrugia who had formed a synth pop band named ‘Progeny’ having participated in the festival ‘Passport per Sanremo’ and started his long collaboration with Edwin Balzan which would lead them to form various electronic dance music projects in the nineties (together also with singer Jotham) named ‘Q-Factory Incorporated’ and ‘Web’.

Having also collaborated with local based dj’s David Dee and Manuel Bella in house music projects, Frank would then form ‘Duo Blank’ with Edwin Balzan which, from 1998 to 2013 released various international singles, 2 studio albums, 1 live album and remixed various local and international dj’s and artists.

Frank also released a solo EP as Frank Blank on the Noise Alliance named ‘Time to Deviate’.

As from 2015, Frank together with Edwin Balzan has been active as part of Electronic Music Malta’s committee and various other projects.

Franks works as an electronics technician and has designed MIDI devices and serviced music equipment since his teens. Together with Mike Desira he is behind the design and production of the ‘Storbju Noise Monger’ device.
