Edwin Balzan

Edwin has been on the forefront in electronic music production in Malta since 1990 having been one of the pioneers of the dance music generation of Maltese electronic music producers. He has studied theory of music and the pianoforte from the age of ten, however self taught himself sound-design and music production from the age of 19 onwards.

Edwin formed various musical projects and duo’s as from the mid nineties managing to sign record deals to release various international dance music singles as parts of projects named ‘Web’, ‘Semitic Groove Foundation’, ‘Duo Blank’ and ‘Parallaks’ and also collaborated with Maltese dj’s David Dee and Owen Jay and international dj’s and producers Marco Bailey, Redhead and Toni Rios. Edwin has produced in various musical genres including: synth-pop, pop, techno, house, ambient and drum’n bass.

Together with Frank Cachia, Edwin still forms a pioneering techno and electronic music duo named Duo Blank which has been formed since 1998 and with which he produced 3 albums and various singles. With Owen Jay, Edwin has formed a duo named ‘Parallaks’ which has released its first vinyl 12 inch single in 2019 with the Swiss-based ‘Moto-Music’ label. Through this duo, Edwin together with Owen aim at composing and performing using modular synthesizers and drum machines.

As from 2006, Edwin has also been running a his own ‘Noise Alliance’ recording studio together with Frank Cachia and also a small music production school. This studio houses a collection of vintage synthesizers and drum machines most of which have previously belonged to Maltese musicians. In 2015, he co-founded Electronic Music Malta and has leading this organisation in the role of President and eventually Executive Director ever since.

In 2019, Edwin has also performed internationally during the Indaba Music Festival held in Pretoria, South Africa together with Dutch electronic musician Luc Houtkamp and South African musician Sazi Dlamini. Edwin releases solo material under the acronym ‘Ed Blank’.
